Taking 10,000 steps is about equivalent to walking five miles, but many of the activities you already do can count toward your total daily steps. Many people already average 2,000 to 3,000 steps a day without even being aware of it. You can easily add steps to your daily total by taking advantage of every opportunity to get moving! Here are tips:
1. Walk your grandkids to the bus stop.
2. Take the stairs rather than the elevator.
3. Park farther from building entrances.
4. Go window shopping.
5. Walk to the mailbox.
6. Get up and move during TV commercials.
7. Walk your dog.
8. Don’t have a dog? Walk your neighbor’s dog!
9. Shovel snow or rake leaves.
10. Hide the remote and change channels the old-fashioned way.
11. Go to the local farmers market or craft fair and visit EVERY BOOTH... TWICE.
12. Keep athletic shoes in the car so you’re always prepared to walk.
13. Climb the stairs at home just for fun.
14. Play golf without a cart, and carry your own clubs.
15. Baby sit a toddler.
16. Instead of going to a movie, go to the park or the zoo.
17. Take up dancing.
18. Speed clean your house to up-beat music.
19. Check in extra early at the airport and take a walk.
